I've been on a bit of a Weird Western kick lately. Old-timey gunslingers versus the supernatural is just a rich vein for videogames to mine, and Guns of Eschaton looks to be one of the most promising games to tackle the concept yet.

It's a souls-like FPS set in a ruined, apocalyptic Wild West as designed by (now tragically passed) Half-Life 2 and Dishonoured artist Viktor Antonov, a detail which new studio Eschatology Entertainment are keen to stress. It certainly looks the part, for sure, especially the town living in the shadow of what appears to be a colossal eldritch worm-god.

Guns of Eschaton promises a slower, more tactical kind of FPS experience befitting a high-stakes dungeon crawler. Sure, there's dodging and parrying, but dealing damage looks to be interesting too.

You're armed with a monster-hunter's lorebook, which you can pull out mid-fight to identify specific weak points on each enemy, and the order they need to be shot. Drilling six shots directly into a demon's face is only likely to make it cranky if the book says you've got to nail it in the left leg and right arm first, which might take some coordinating in co-op.

There's no release date yet for Guns of Eschaton, but you can wishlist it now on Steam. It's set to be published under the banner of Atomic Heart publisher 4Divinity and coming to PS5 and Xbox too.

Disclosure: The writer here got an pre-announcement look at this game due to an earlier job in PR, though was uninvolved in the game's development or promotion.
