Project Solaris is a game about commanding a Homunculus (strange, I know) set in a visually stunning pixel art world that doesn't take itself too seriously – which leads to a pretty decent mage simulator with some quite enjoyable mechanics.
You fill the shoes of Solaris, a failed mage-in-training, who is trying to create her first homunculus (homunculi?) to use in Pokémon-esque battles, and when she finally achieves her goal of creating her first creature, she begins her 100-day journey with her new pal, Hom, as they grow closer together and grow in power.
Project Solaris uses turn-based combat, but also adds an element of skill with checks required for each action made. This can lead to critical hits, normal hits, and even missing the attack altogether, adding pressure when committing to win-or-lose situations, since it is no longer random but in your hands.
Like with many turn-based RPG games, you can upgrade and tune your character to your heart's content. Money gained from battles can be used to purchase more items to aid you on your journey with your new friend – who can not only wield and equip much more than Solaris can, but can also only equip items made specifically for him, so think before you craft or buy (especially because crafting outcomes are randomised).
Another way you can shape your adventure is through Project Solaris' card system. The game uses cards to not only grant you upgrades, but also form the story and decide which paths you are to take. This means certain cards will unlock storylines and decide how the plot unfolds and who it unfolds with (meaning there are also multiple endings for all of you completionists out there). Each card spells a different outcome for your adventure; what will you choose?
Overall, Project Solaris is a fun RPG that doesn't overstay its welcome; it has a short runtime but still allows for relaxing gameplay with sprinkles of skill needed here and there. If this sounds up your alley, buy Project Solaris on Steam for £8.18 in the 10% off sale, or £9.09 at full price. There's also a demo you can try.
