Underkeep Could Be the Dungeon Master Successor I've Been Waiting for All These Years 1

Earlier this year, I wrote about Underkeep for one of our sister sites, Time Extension – and with good reason.

I'm a massive Dungeon Master fan, and Rake in Grass's first-person RPG ticks many of the same boxes as that esteemed classic.

It's described as "a loving tribute to the role-playing classics of the 90s with turn-based combat and grid-based movement" and, in addition to honouring FTL's game, also has the same vibe as similar titles, such as Eye of the Beholder and Lands of Lore.

You pick a party of warriors – making sure to strike a good balance between offensive skills, magic and healing talents – and strike off into the hand-drawn world, which is naturally packed with monsters to take down.

"Underkeep brings back the spirit of classic dungeon crawlers," the developer insists. "Grid movement, slow tension and tactical combat. At the same time, it plays clean and responsive thanks to modern controls, clear visuals and thoughtful conveniences that remove the old frustrations without losing the heart."

A demo is available now, but you don't have long to wait until the game hits Steam – it arrives this week, in fact, on Thursday.
