The legacy of Cruelty Squad is clear to see. In the wake of its satirical nightmare world of MSPaint-core violence and horrors comes a procession of similarly unhinged games. And today, we are graced with the early access release of Sniper Camouflage Orange Spy Warrior I Buried Two Bodies in the Garden and the Police Haven't Figured Out Yet That They're Missing Because They Were a Lonely Old Couple Who Had No Relatives Simulator 2026, which I will henceforth be referring to as SCOSW because help.

The latest in a series of unsettling, eye-searing games from The Only Way Out (mostly immersive sims or shooters), for all of its absurd nightmarish clown-vomit visual overload, this might be one of the most involved sniping simulators around. Perhaps not realistic, but weirdly authentic-feeling. Everything here is a physical item to be dragged around with your free-floating mouse cursor, representing your hands. From your rifle case (which has to be carried to the sniping site and unpacked) to the unhinged wall of UI that greets you from there.

You need to then insert the magazine into your gun, picking your ammo type. Pull back the slide. Use binoculars to spot your target, then estimate their distance with a laser rangefinder. Then you need to check the wind speed, and then dial in both of those stats into the gun. And THEN you can start sighting up your target (by dragging the physical gun from side to side - this is not a normal FPS), zooming in and getting ready to take the shot. This makes the Sniper Elite series look like Deer Avenger.

It is a small mercy that the SCOSW has you shooting only the most abstract of human shapes, which just topple over like bowling pins when hit.

And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Shooting is just one part of this game. There's fishing, and driving, and boating, and rock-climbing, and smoking, and all of them are just as unhinged and involved as the act of pointing a gun and pulling the trigger. And there's still more to come! This is only the initial early access release, featuring seven main levels, each of which apparently has two possible endings. The developer plans to add a few more main levels, many new bonus levels (branching off from third endings on the main missions), and add Steam Workshop support with a level editor.

I am also afraid of what people might create with this game, especially if it takes off. Early access is estimated to take between six months and a year on this one, and I am torn on whether I want to see it achieve all its goals, or be cast in to a deep, dark abyss. Maybe a little of both.

SCOSW is out now on Steam for £9.09/$10, with a 10% launch discount. It is also, unsurprisingly, in a discount bundle with BRAZILIAN DRUG DEALER 3: I OPENED A PORTAL TO HELL IN THE FAVELA TRYING TO REVIVE MIT AIA I NEED TO CLOSE IT, because I guess there's some kind of contest to break Steam's title formatting. And ours, for that matter.
