Things remain less-than-great on the hive-world of Atoma, but that just means all the more Chaos gits for krumpin'. Today, Fatshark's co-op shoot n' smasher Warhammer 40,000: Darktide grows three sizes, although that could just be Nurgle-related swelling, and you should get that checked by your local apothecary. The Depths of the Damned update adds a new three-mission story campaign, sending players down into the infested bowels of the city to take out the Prophet of Decay, a particularly odorous villain that's stinking up the new Spillway sector.

As detailed in the patch notes here, the first two missions of this new story arc will take players through remixed versions of the Consignment Yard and Enclavum baross zones, while the final segment will be set in the all-new Spillway region, part of the city's water network and thoroughly infested with gooey, squishy chaos meat. It's giant eyeballs and oversized teeth all the way down, with the deepest point guarded by a new boss - a powerful plague-spreading psyker.

Along with the new threats come a few new ways to clear them out, detailed here. There are three all-new weapon types coming with this update - two for the Ogryn (my class of choice, so I'm happy) - the Cruncher and the Thugshot, a giant hammer and slug shotgun, respectively. Lastly, all human classes get access to the Huntsman pump-action shotgun, which is heavier and slower than the Exterminator model. There are also a few new variant weapons for existing weapons, including a new Crusher, a long-barreled version of the double-barreled sawed-off, and a more aggressive variant of the Ogryn shield & maul combo.

While Darktide's user review score may be ever-sinking (as seems to be the curse of most live-service games), I'm personally quite happy with the business model Fatshark has worked out for it, with new classes being an optional purchase, but all the new missions, modes and guns coming as free to everyone, so the player base doesn't get split between haves and have-nots. Given all the love Ogryns have been getting, I've seen no point in buying the new classes, and today's update and new weapons further vindicate that decision.

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide is currently £33/$40 with no discounts, but Steam's Autumn sale is just a couple of days away, so if you're after a good deal, you might want to hold off a little longer.
