Retro Space caught my eye because it's a horror game set in a bright, disco-punk world filled with lights, devices, and shiny reflective metal galore, as if it has come straight out of a '70s sci-fi comic. In it, you can take on frightening, malformed enemies or sneak around them and avoid direct confrontation entirely; it's up to you in the immersive interior of the Aurora 5.
The game sees you exploring a ship caught in a black hole, filled to the brim with a plethora of different alternate routes, secrets, and much more that allow you to tackle different hostile scenarios the way you want to approach them.
Think before you act by setting environmental traps for your enemies, like mixing water with electricity (ouch) or using a fire extinguisher as a makeshift jetpack (woo!). You can even take control of the ship's (very lethal) security systems to gain the upper hand, but be careful before you make them a precarious ally; they might not be so friendly.
If you need a break from this horrific situation, you can always take a break at the safe (enough) central hub, where you can ponder, well, anything; you have as much time as you want.
Never fear, however, going in weapons hot is an equally valid means of getting past a group of horrors beyond comprehension; you can be aided in this with the use of MUTAMODS.
MUTAMODS let you do things previously impossible, such as, you know, becoming a mind-controlling, shadow-lurking, tentacle-armed mutant monster (run-of-the-mill stuff, really), which can greatly help you in combat or stealth; take your pick. However, I should warn you: using MUTAMODS can and will result in some pretty unsavoury long-term effects if mismanaged, so choose wisely and balance the benefit against the consequence.
You needn't really be afraid of anything on the Aurora, however, as you cannot die; the ship can reproduce an infinite number of you and your perfect '70s 'tache, but I would still read the fine print before you agree to such risky scientific endeavours, as cloning over and over again surely can't be good for the mind or the body.
Between all the dying, sneaking, and fighting, you will have to figure out how to get yourself out of this mess, as the sentient black hole that interrupted the Aurora 5's century-long expedition doesn't seem to be letting go anytime soon. Explore, defeat enemies, and try to find a way out, or die trying (and then do it all again).
If this tale of action and stealth across a humanity-saving intergalactic mission sounds good to you, fly on over to Steam right now.
