This is a really interesting, even if kinda depressing article.

IMO, one thing often overlooked is that we're at a point where games have to compete with the past. More now than ever, considering the tech has reached an apex. For example, if you're just a casual gamer, why would you get a Switch 2 when a Switch 1 has such a vast library? And for folks like me who have a backlog of 100s of games in my Steam Library, why do I need one of the new ones?

This means that it's even more difficult to invest in the production of new games.

My hope is that the consolidation of the industry means that we'll start to feel video games as an art form again. Smaller teams over larger ones, with a few exceptions. To your point, it's never been easier to create games for a vast spectrum of hardware. I think we'll have to embrace that. My pipe dream would be to see classic consoles, which are sort of immune to the hardware crisis, revived by their creators — imagine buying a NEW SNES title made by Nintendo veterans in their retirement years!
