Have you ever wanted to play hockey in space? Me neither, but now that I have, I can say confidently that I'm glad I did.

Space Hockey is a Sci-Fi sports game where you mount a rocket-powered hoverbike (which reminds me a lot of the light cycles seen in Tron) to compete for control of a puck, aiming the hurl it into a gravity goal.

While reminiscent of games like Rocket League, it introduces some interesting mechanics; although they are far from perfect, they offer a fresh take on the more common gameplay choices in other sports games.

One of my favourites is the aforementioned “gravity” goal. This unique type of goal is more comparable to a tiny black hole, sucking the puck in if it gets too close, or flinging it away if it moves near it too fast. This means you have to have pinpoint precision, or know how to use this gravitational pull to your advantage, to directly hit the centre of the goal, allowing you to score.

However, to prevent the same thing from happening to you, your bike has lasers that let you shoot the puck out of your enemy's grasp, a boost to close the distance after you do so, and a gravity pulse that lets you pull in the puck if it is out of play. These defensive and offensive mechanics feel fluid and well balanced, with all abilities having a cooldown.

There are different modes to choose from in Space Hockey, with the main ones being singles and doubles, doubles being the intended way to play, and also how career mode is played. It also has a small selection of maps that all fit the same Tron-like aesthetic. There is also bike customisation and factions that change how you look and the colour of your bike and outfit, with each faction having a substantial amount of lore in its description, which is very appreciated.

Split-screen multiplayer is also supported, which is a nice touch since online multiplayer is not, but I would love to see it implemented at a later date if possible.

Space Hockey is a game that has really intrigued me, from its cover art, which I love, to its simple yet snappy, fluid gameplay. Sure, it isn't without its faults, but I think for a few dollars, you can't really go wrong with it (it's also on console, too).
