Otterly Lost is a cosy, relaxing exploration game where you embark on an (unwilling) adventure as a lone otter, finding new friends, places, and various challenges along the way while you attempt to figure out how to return home.
This wholesome, story-rich adventure game focuses on finding where you really belong through the guise of a small, lost, semi-aquatic mammal named Otto; you get to explore a stunning retro-stylised world that's a treat for the eyes (and what personally got me excited) as you ponder the wonders and meaning of life. Deep stuff.
After you are swept far away from your otter home, you have to put your exploration skills to good use in order to figure out how to return while learning more about belonging – and perhaps even realising there are places for you outside of your home.
You can progress through your journey at your own pace; stride or swim around the various explorable locations and uncover many hidden areas and caves – many of which contain things that you usually would not find. It pays to let your curiosity get the better of you and look around every corner.
Every otter faced with an adventure also needs its most prized possession, its most perfect tool, the humble rock. Use this to break through anything blocking your path, or to find new tools and precious items deep below the surface.
The rock is your best friend on this adventure – speaking of friends, you'll meet new acquaintances who will help you on your journey – or potentially even need your aid – while getting to know them as the game progresses and learning more about what it means to truly 'belong'.
Otterly Lost drew me in with its gorgeous graphics and philosophical premise that weirdly reminded me of Web Fishing and Sky: Children of the Light (I can't pinpoint why; it just does), which really intrigued me.
If an impromptu journey across land and sea sounds like perfection to you, then you can pick up Otterly Lost today on Steam.
