Skyrim Sends Players on a Quest to IKEA's Depths for Shelving Voiced by Matt Berry

I love my job. Sometimes you get to write about the most ridiculous things possible and desperately try to convince the world they're real. Case in point: Eternal time-sponge Skyrim got some free DLC today–KALLAX: Storageborn–courtesy of IKEA, the Swedish furniture mega-store. In it, you go on a quest into an ancient Dwemer furniture store decked out in Swedish flag colours, and recruit a new party member - an ambulatory shelving unit voiced by prolific British TV funnyman Matt Berry.

I understand any disbelief. I had to check that it wasn't April 1st. It is, in fact, early September. Then I had to check that it was actually real and not just a weirdly unseasonal joke. But nope, it appears that IKEA has gone the whole hog with this unhinged piece of adver-gaming nonsense, and it's available in-game now. And much as I would like to be cynical, being marketed to by a giant Swedish furniture chain, it is so preposterously absurd I have to give them a thumbs up. There may be no ethical consumption under capitalism, but free stupid stuff's cool. I won't complain if they mail me a free Blåhaj, either.

There's more to the mod than just a silly companion, although you CAN fill Kallax's shelves with your gear and have those items displayed on him as he wobbles through the world. There's also some unique fights to be found, like an animated pile of clutter, some saucepan-wearing draugr, and some new loot to find, like a Swedish flag shield, the 'mighty Allenblade' (presumably good at disassembling foes), and the Meatball Helmet. Get a look at it in the mod release trailer below, which is as well produced as you'd expect from IKEA, too.

If you own Skyrim on PC (or Xbox), you can grab the Kallax: Storageborn add-on via the in-game Creation Club interface, or bookmark it on the game's official site here. If you don't... Well, this falls under the BDS boycott of Microsoft, so you probably shouldn't, but if you ABSOLUTELY must, it's on Steam for a hefty £35/$40, though at the time of writing you can snag the Anniversary Edition (which includes a bundle of DLC) for much cheaper via Green Man Gaming - and yes, they are a legit store.
