Gone is the era of unrelenting waves of zombie survival shooters being released left right and centre, with it seeming like that brain-eating, flesh-biting era of the 2010s has all but ended, dead and buried.
Milo, however, aims to roll back the clock, at least partially, and bring that classic, Call of Duty-inspired WWII zombies back with all the bells and whistles of a modern instalment, in a perhaps even darker tone than its predecessors, with a large array of its own unique features.
You, along with up to 3 players, are thrust into a nightmarish hellscape to take part in a cruel game of survival on a hand-crafted map against hordes of cultists who have the sole aim of ripping you to shreds.
Utilise 12 World War-era weapons to tear the horde apart before it can do the same to you, and call upon your throng of rats to feast on the corpses of the dead to charge your, let's say, unusual, ability to "pop corpses", while stacking buffs to create a build that works for your playstyle, finding interactables such as the "cream machine" that further change your playthrough, letting you have a quite modular character all-round.
These rats are important for more than just combat, however, as they are also able to be extracted and used to play arcade games that earn you tickets and upgrades to use in your constant fight against the brainwashed cult of evil.
These mysteriously obedient rats can also be used to buy you some sweet cosmetics to show off to all of your friends, and, as the developer states, "show your friends how much better you are than them", so you have a guilt-free pass to be as vain and smug as you want (just be ready to lose a few pals in the process).
Milo has been criticised, however, for being slightly lacking in content for the usual £15.99 price tag, and with only 1 map and a small selection of weapons, I can see why. However, the developer has already said more content is coming, and a new map is already in development, so I don't think the price tag is a big ask; just be aware it is a smaller game than the ones you might be used to in the genre.
Milo is a revitalising take on the classic zombie horde survival formula, and looks to be a blast with a couple of friends, so if you and some mates want a fresh but familiar zombie experience, then there's no better time to check out Milo on Steam, as it is on a 10% sale right now – making it $14.39 rather than the usual $15.99.
