I have always loved racing games, specifically futuristic ones. The feeling of taking a corner perfectly, reaching max speed, and somehow keeping control of the space rocket you are strapped to... it all just tickles my brain in a way no other type of game does, and while Voxotron isn't your classic racer, it takes all of that to the next level.
Voxotron is a straightforward auto runner that is probably something you have seen dozens of times over: run, dodge, stay alive as long as possible until you inevitably crash headfirst into an obstacle, the usual.
Voxotron, however, has a unique system that makes this standard loop stand out from the crowd. There's no speed limit, meaning you can go as fast as you want within the time limit of each round, being 30 seconds, or until you speed into a neon-drenched death barrier.
The pace really feels like true speed; at times you almost can't even make out the cylinder you are blasting across, and it becomes a blur of colour and shape, which, like the overall art style of the game, does look stunning.
As someone who always likes picking the fastest speed on any game where I can even remotely do something like racing, the commitment to making going fast feel and look fast really is appreciated; it also opens up for some immensely skilful gameplay at high speeds, as it gets quite difficult when you have to react within milliseconds.
Don't worry if you don't want the fastest speed all the time, however, as you can always use a different boost class of the 3 available, such as:
- Flow: the slowest, allowing for the boost to be used virtually all the time, perfect for beginners
- Hyper: the medium boost, goes fast but still doesn't quite reach the top speed
- Overdrive: the fastest, made for players wanting speed and only speed; unless you can stay focused for the entire run, then I would play with the other 2 for now
Performing "near misses" also grants extra speed, and making smooth, natural turns maintains your momentum. Avoid sharp movements that make you lose speed, and follow the line along the curve of the cylinder for the most optimal route. Use these tips to climb the leaderboard and compete against other players' ghosts.
Speaking of other players, race in online runs on randomised maps for a level playing field, download player-created maps from the Steam Workshop, or even make your own, and play the torturous levels the community has created.
If you like racing, fast racing in particular, then I think there is a great chance that you will love Voxotron, and if you are apprehensive, there is even a free demo out right now.
