The thing all the big name studios have forgotten in the wake of rapid successes ( in relative terms ) like Fortnite, Minecraft, Terraria, or whatever else you'd care to name, is lasting success takes longer to get, and you can't just "front-load" that timetable with money and dev time.
If you could throw money and time at a game and make it a hit, we'd have seen a LOT faster success from Cyberpunk 2077 or No Man's Sky day one.
These games are famous "stumble and recover" cases that listened to their fans and customers and made good on their word later, to varying degrees. Only true effort AFTER the release, can make a true lasting hit.
Doesn't really matter whether as above your game overpromised or came out in a flurry of "must make it to market" half-baked rush, or is even "rough but workable" even as a complete project in the first entry.
Assassin's Creed, Hitman, even Mass Effect itself shipped as completed works, but had superior sequels that built on a passable but rough base, many could say. Modern game dev companies spend decades and dollars trying to build in "guaranteed success" by using trends to make a "golden lightning rod", only to fail to realize gold can't attract lightning.
@species Oh yeah, and We're facing the prospect of an up-and-coming generation who can't read well enough to SPELL Oppenheimer, in a book or on a website. (and I capitalize "We" 'cause it's the entire Earth's problem)
I'd LOVE it if this would just unite people against the slop, and I did open the post saying the "It's inevitable" argument is shallow and a form of "giving up", but I ended on the idea that all this arguing is kinda pointless.
I for one loathe gen-AI.
I mean, I am a furry artist, so I have a dog in that fight
(and a few otters, several rabbits, obviously)
and I'm just seeing all manner of arrogance on both sides but mostly the "it's inevitable" camp.
I actually pay attention to history, thank you.
For all it matters, simply, the arrogance of most "it's inevitable" arguments sound incredibly asinine.
All anyone can do here on a gaming website is complain about it, so it's my turn, and my complaint is "the Inevitable crowd I've seen seems to have the most got censored referring to an oft-filthy piece of common mammal anatomy per capita" and I'm sick of hearing it from those same dirty anatomy word, I guess.
I see these
"progress is inevitable" posts
and I wonder if anyone ever saw Oppenheimer a few years ago and came out with less perspective than they went into with it... assuming they had it either way.
Or even READ about him and his remorse without seeing the movie.
Or even had the good taste to have seen Jurassic Park and missed the whole "got so caught in 'they could', they never stopped to consider if they should."
Whatev. at me if you want, dont care, we're all screaming on a sinking ship anyway

@species
That was kinda my point I ended on.
