Void/Breaker is a game I am certain a fair few of you have already seen or heard of before, and is already known for its high-octane, fast-moving, bullet-flinging, digital destruction – but with its full 1.0 release right around the corner, a huge amount of content is just about to be added. So, even if you have heard of, or even played, Void/Breaker, the 1.0 release might just draw you into the program once and for all.
If you haven't heard of Void/Breaker, it is an action roguelike that drops you into a simulation, forcing you to fight and die over and over in an infinite loop while teaching the hostile AI that controls it the combat skills you hold dear.
You are tasked with breaking out of this loop (along with your very Cyber City 808-inspired companion) and freeing anyone trapped inside. It is your classic roguelike loop: upgrade between runs, get stronger, learn more about your enemies, and go further each time around.
Now, don't be mistaken: just because this is a loop you may know doesn't mean this game will feel boring or generic. I'd say it feels the complete opposite, as its gameplay features and design choices make it the perfect example of "fresh".
Two core gameplay elements that really shine in Void/Breaker are the full-scale destruction and weapon modification systems. Now, this isn't just meaningless visual clutter or simple stat boosts, either. Void/Breaker's destruction actually feeds into the core gameplay loop of the experience, allowing you to stun enemies with rubble, opening them up to a lethal blow that grants you health, and the deep weapon modification system can completely change how your weapon plays, allowing for crazy build variety and making each mod and combination of mods feel unique and new.
This creates extremely cinematic, immersive moments that are unbelievably addictive to play through, and they all synergise well with the amazing environment design and art style that feel great to traverse.
Along with all this chaotic, destructive goodness, update 1.0 will bring even more features to Void/Breaker that weren't in the purchasable version of the game before. These updates range from anything as small as achievements (over 50 added, to be exact) all the way up to 4 new weapons, a new boss, multiple new enemies, and even a new zone along with the story's conclusion.
This is a massive amount of content to add to a game like this, especially as a solo project, so I'm excited to see where this launch goes and what's planned for the future. So if Void/Breaker's amazing combat, destruction, or incredible art design catches your eye, go check it out on Steam right now for £23.99, with the full release coming November 4th.
