Ever wanted Titanfall and a cosy-style Farming Simulator mixed together? Well, it doesn't matter if you have or haven't because it is here – and more importantly, it's pretty good, if you ask me.
I was first introduced to Lightyear Frontier some time ago now via Xbox Game Pass, and even back then I was impressed – but now it seems to have grown even larger, into a game that is actually quite different from what I experienced back then, for good and for... not so good.
Lightyear Frontier is, at heart, a farming sim, set on a far-off exoplanet that needs to be made habitable, but it has a unique hook: your main farming tool is a Titanfall-esque mech (I won't lie – that is what drew me in, for sure) that can do a whole host of things to help with your farming endeavours.
It can carry attachments that will help you massively with watering, planting, and a whole host of other farming needs. This mech-based gameplay makes the farming feel different to other simulators; big tasks can be done in one fell swoop easily from the safety of your cockpit, and traversing the land just feels a lot more fun than usual, making the farming hopefully feel a lot less tedious when it comes to the little things.
As with many cosy simulators, you can of course build yourself the house of your dreams bit by bit, with full control over its customisation and what you want it to look like.
I really enjoy this part of simulators, and I think Lightyear Frontier does a great job of executing it well and simply. If you think this sounds great, but you really value some Co-Op in your cosy games (I know I do too), you will be pleased to know you can invite up to 3 friends to join your extraterrestrial journey.
Lightyear Frontier has caught some heat from players who played the earlier game, however, due to the amount it has changed over the course of its lifespan up to full launch. Many people seem to criticise how Lightyear Frontier has become too generic and has strayed away from what it was before, and is no longer the game they once played.
While this can be true for some, I do think new players will have a different experience than this, though – and it's worth noting that the reviews are still very positive overall, so it is just something to keep in mind perhaps if you are a returning player after a long break.
Overall, Lightyear Frontier is an enjoyable and relaxing farming simulator with some very interesting 'mech-anics' that drew me in when I first played it – and if anything I've said here has you interested, it might be worth checking out for yourself.
