The arrival of Generative AI tools has had a massive impact on pretty much every walk of life in 2026, but video gaming is arguably the industry that has felt its presence most.

GenAI is being used to create art and other assets, as well as code and playtest games. It has become such a massive part of the conversation that, in October, almost half of the games released on Steam used GenAI of some form.

A new survey has analysed over 63,000 games released on the platform since January 2024 (thanks, Dexerto), when Valve introduced mandatory AI disclosures demanding developers to disclose how and when GenAI has been used in their games.

At the start of 2024, just 1.7% of new releases carried such a disclosure. In October 2025, it rose to 26.4% – and last month, a year later, it reached 49.9%. For the year to date, 40.1% of games released on Steam have some form of AI-generated content.

The actual figure is almost certainly higher, as developers can choose to not disclose when AI is used – a common practice given the blowback that comes with it. Also, since January 2026, the disclosure only covers visual and audio AI-generated content – AI coding tools aren't included.

Steam currently doesn't allow you to filter by GenAI, but other digital storefronts are slowly but surely taking action to stem the wave of AI slop. Itch.io has recently introduced an AI filter, and the admins behind the service are actively removing low-quality AI games.
