Fractal Block World is one of the most interesting and obscure games I have ever played, and I'm tempted to call it a work of art – and of genius.
Developed by Dan Hathaway, the game takes place in what is called a “fractal.” In case you were wondering, this is "a never-ending pattern" that is "infinitely complex" and "self-similar across different scales". With regard to Fractal Block World, it is a space you can shrink or grow a near-endless number of times, and it will look relatively similar.
For example, in Fractal Block World you can find a block, shrink down to the size of it, and reveal a whole other explorable world on the previously tiny piece of geometry – then you can find another block in this tiny world you have discovered, and repeat the same process time and time again (very confusing, I know) which makes for some amazing discoveries and exploration opportunities like no other game I've played before.
Fractal Block World really takes this concept and runs with it, creating not only a vast array of biomes, but biomes within these separate biomes, along with different structures such as mazes that grant you rewards and XP towards levelling up, and ammunition for the many weapons that you have at your disposal.
Fundamentally, Fractal Block World is an exploration game, one in which you are tasked with finding your friend at the centre of the fractal filled with frightening (and honestly sometimes funny) monsters, floating around the different areas and using clues and hints to achieve your goal.
While it is by no means a graphical marvel, and might even seem visually unappealing to some, Fractal Block World is nonetheless incredibly intriguing. Every corner begs to be explored and discovered, thanks to its simple design choices that make it easy to find your way around; each important landmark often has a colour assigned to it, such as the yellow pyramids.
The simplification of the exploration is needed as navigation is already quite taxing with the confusing maze of a world surrounding you, so I honestly love it the way it is.
If you like the sound of the surreal journey that is Fractal Block World, you can pick it up on Steam for just £5.89. I'd recommend you check it out, as it's an experience like no other.
