If you have been around the Souls-like space over the recent years, you will have almost certainly heard of Mortal Shell. Released back in 2020, the somewhat unique take on the Souls-like genre was gifted to the world, letting you control an array of different “shells” that would directly influence your playstyle.

It drew mixed reactions, with some loving it and others not so much, but it seems the dedicated people over at Cold Symmetry took that feedback to heart and improved the core loop and features to create Mortal Shell 2.

Sticking with the central gameplay loop of hopping in and out of the aforementioned shells, Mortal Shell 2 is a standalone sequel that expands on this and gives you 8 new shells for you to mess about with, wielding weapons such as dual axes, huge claymores, and even Bloodborne-esque shotguns.

The customisation of a classic Souls-like is definitely there, letting you play the way that you see fit and giving you the freedom to approach every fight in many different ways, completely “unrestricted by stamina”, further opening the possibilities for new ways to play.

The world of Mortal Shell 2 is a compact and concise place that was designed with “respect for the player's time” in mind, while still offering a plethora of upgrades and free exploration, which is honestly very refreshing given the amount of open world games that, while amazing, demand hours of your time just to get a single item.

Despite this, exploration in Mortal Shell 2 still proves very rewarding, with players who stray from the main path being rewarded with new weapons, shells and upgrades for their efforts.

Mortal Shell 2 can be purchased in 2 different packages: the standard selling for £39.99, and a “devout edition” for £47.99 that includes various customisation goodies for your shells. It releases worldwide today, and if you are unsure about purchasing, you can play the demo for free right now.
