Aniimo is the "next-gen" creature-catching RPG from Pawprint Studios, allowing you to explore the expansive open world of Idyll, containing "Aniimo" to collect and have as companions on your journey around the vast continent while you take part in exciting battles and enticing competitions. Sound familiar?
While you may draw some comparisons to other creature-catching games (cough..cough... Pokémon..cough), Aniimo actually boasts some pretty interesting and unique features that set itself apart from the likes of Palworld and 'the one who shall not be named'.
Aniimo allows you to really explore the world you inhabit, with features like "twine" that allow you to essentially 'become' one of your Aniimo and solve puzzles with your newfound skills.
The vast open world complements this feature, too, offering plenty of exploration in a beautiful game environment. Along with this, each player has their own caravan to relax in, so if you ever feel like just building up your personal area and inviting other people over to chill and have a break from the tiring adventuring, you totally can.
Another quite unique feature of Aniimo is the "egg heist" game mode. Egg heist is a PvEvP mode that places you into teams of 3 to participate in real-time battles and hunts across the lost isles, containing real, "instantaneous" challenges against other players.
Despite all of this content, Aniimo currently sits at a 'mixed' rating on Steam, with many of the reviews complaining about a lack of care for players and a half-baked experience; although a lot of players also report the game playing just as they would have expected, really enjoying the loop.
Aniimo seems to be a solid creature-catching experience that should scratch the itch and leave fans of the genre satisfied, with maybe a little jank here and there. So if the game looks like it would be for you, I would still give it a shot, as you may love it if you are a fan of established creature-catching games (it's also free, so why not?).

With a name like Aniimo (smells like Amiibo), is the target audience people who get their jollies taunting Nintendo?
As someone who plays a lot of Pokemon Champions and isn't really interested in all these other creature gathering games, I hope they continue doing well and showing how embarrassingly unpolished Game Freak's offerings are.
@axelhander They really need to step up their game with Winds and Waves, given the entire Switch generation of mainline Pokémon games was technically embarrassing. Scarlet and Violet in particular were atrocious on a technical level.
I don't mind a good creature collection game but I generally try to avoid anything with a free to play model and the mixed Steam reviews sure aren't convincing me to give it a try.
I tried playing this with a controller. But it was showing me to press keyboard keys. The game is out on PS5, so it should have shown me PS5 button icons.
I was thinking about giving this 1 a try, don’t play Pokemon, currently playing Infinity Nikki and NTE, but I read there’s so much stuff going on the opening 2-3 hours is just tutorial. So I think I’m going to pass on this one while I wait for ANANANTA in January.
