It took a long time to get there, but with the release of the Cost of Hope expansion and the v2.0 overhaul a couple of months back, STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl is now the irradiated post-apocalyptic field trip that it was always meant to be. But few things are ever perfect, and one consistent complaint even post-2.0 was that snipers (or just observant players with binoculars) would find NPCs spawning in abruptly, well within visible range. Today's update - The Zone Lookout - addresses that, along with over a hundred other minor issues.
The full patch notes are, as always, here (and extensive), but the big feature here is a new option in the options menu to let you extend the distance at which full A-Life simulation is active. That is, autonomous groups of NPCs that can roam, fight, and die whether you're looking at them or not. There's a warning that extending the radius out too far can lower performance or cause stability issues, but there's a handy 'dynamic' mode that'll extend it out as far as the game feels your PC can handle.
Combat AI and ballistics have also been tuned to favor longer-range encounters. There's also one interesting new quality-of-life feature - fast travel available out in the Zone itself. But as this is STALKER, it won't come cheap. You can hire squad leaders to take you to locations that are on their regular patrol route. This won't let you travel enormous distances in one click, but it can save you a lengthy hike if you've got a few thousand credits to spare.
Beyond that, there's a whole barrel of little fixes and quest scripting improvements. NPCs will now stop for a moment to talk with you instead of just chattering while wandering away. Characters will freak out less if you hit your melee button at nothing in particular. Bushes and thin tree branches will no longer deflect your bullets. Environment art has been tuned up across the Generators, Cooling Tower, CNPP, Malachite, and X-16 Lab regions, and some rifle scopes will now make the world sharper instead of blurrier. Standard stuff for STALKER.
Along with the new update (which is live now), the basic version of STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl is 30% off, down from £50/$60. That said, I'd recommend waiting for a discount on the Ultimate edition, which includes the one Cost of Hope expansion, with one more due out in the new year. There's also an ambitious online multiplayer mode still planned. GSC Game World is far from done with this roadside picnic.
