Sometimes a game just needs a little more time in the oven before it truly shines. Possibly five years or so, in Cyberpunk 2077's case. Much-maligned at launch, CD Projekt Red's ambitious FPS RPG is now widely regarded as a classic, and is now flanked by two full anime series, courtesy of famous animation house Studio Trigger. Accompanying this week's Netflix-exclusive (boo!) Edgerunners 2–telling the story of another likely-doomed gang in Night City–a major update just rolled out for the game, adding a bunch of crossover cosmetics, some new missions, and a whole new dual-wielding combat style.
The patch notes are lengthy, but the short version is that there's a bunch of new Edgerunners crossover stuff going on. A new quest called Clampdown (available after doing a couple of gigs for Wakako) that'll give you an outfit based on gaunt-faced heavy cyborg King from the new anime. There's a new radio station featuring music from the anime, too.
Not all the new content is Edgerunners-based, with a new narrated tour of the city available early in the game, and there's another 12 Arcana cards to find hidden in the city, extending the old Fool on the Hill quest. And knowing CD Projekt, they likely slipped in a couple extra secrets for players to find.
Fashion is a big focus here too. Players now have access to a bunch more hairstyles (although some of them are gender-locked); there are several new clothing lines available across the city. It's not just your outfit getting a switch-up here, as there are now 'glamdoc' cybernetics shops scattered around the city, each with a catalogue of custom looks for your existing cyberware.
Mechanically, the biggest addition is a dual-wielding combat style, branching off the Cool skill tree (as you'd expect), with several auxiliary perks. Now you can double up on Power-type pistols and revolvers. As someone who used a heavy revolver through most of the game, that suits me just fine.
And for us PC sickos who got beefy GPUs before prices went bananas, the game's DLSS model has been upgraded to 4.5, ray tracing performance has been improved, and HDR is now better supported. Most curiously, those with absurdly expensive Samsung Odyssey 3D monitors get officially supported depth perception.
Lastly, the game now features cross-platform mod sharing and browsing via Mod.io. While it'll likely take some time for the big stuff to move over from Nexus Mods, there's a lot of stuff that I'm excited to see come over, especially the mods that made gangs and police (of various kinds, ranging from border patrol to corporate security) more active and responsive in the world.
The Ultimate edition of Cyberpunk 2077 (including the excellent Phantom Liberty expansion) is currently 60% off to celebrate the big update, taking a bit of a chunk out of its hefty £68/98/$82.78 price tag. If you've been on the fence about the game, now's a pretty good time to check it out.
