Poly Fighter is an unlikely combination of what I feel are two very different genres – fighting and single-player roguelike – making for a more relaxed fighting game experience while still keeping it interesting at its core, with upgrades and meaningful combining of moves to create a unique and powerful build that plays how you want to play, in a great roguelike fashion.
Choose a character and take on different challengers as you progress through a roguelike path of encounters, gaining new moves after every fight, using simple or motion inputs, so even someone with no fighting game experience can enjoy the adrenaline-fueled roguelike ladder.
If you aren't a beginner, however, don't fear, as you can adjust your experience to play how easy (or difficult) you want it, with 3 different modifiers: Classic groove, the standard; Cosy groove, easy mode; and finally fierce groove, the challenging and unpredictable mode for players looking for a hardcore fighting game experience.
Try your hand at ascension runs and rise through 3 leagues, building your character with moves and abilities to enhance your fights, with each 1-on-1 brawl feeling fresh.
Moving through the game also feels responsive and snappy, and the controls are intuitive, even on motion, which, in my opinion, is a great approach. With all the moves to learn, it would be a pain to have overcomplicated D-Pad inputs, and I believe that the way it is done is perfect for the game: a balance between complex and fun. As someone who is very particular about controls, this really is a great thing.
If you have ever enjoyed a fighting game and are maybe looking to dip your toes into some roguelike action, then I don't think you can go wrong with Poly Fighter, which showcases great controls and an addictive gameplay loop (along with a pretty good soundtrack, if you ask me).
If you are looking to pick it up, Poly Fighter is on a 10% sale on Steam, making it £15.29 right now, with the usual price being £16.99. (A demo is also available for those interested!)
